Ellie's Art

Since we have moved and Ellie has started at her new school, she has really taken an interest in coloring and painting. She used to not want to spend 30 seconds coloring. She wouldn't touch, let alone use a paintbrush. Even at school...she enjoyed the clay activities, but not anything else (and they had an art teacher and a special art room).

Its different now. She colors within the lines. Uses different colors for different parts of the picture. She even enjoys using watercolors to paint pictures. She spends minutes (10+ minutes), long periods of time for a preschooler, and quality time doing art and coloring.

I don't think Ellie is an artistic genius. I have no preconceptions that she is a prodigy or anything. I just find it interesting how quickly she has taken an interest in drawing/painting since we have moved and how much it has changed. She went from 20 seconds of not even trying to color inside the lines, to focusing and using different colors for different objects. She went from not caring about paint, to using different colors to start drawing princesses. The following is just a sampling that I thought I would share.

The above work is an early coloring job of Ellie, right after we moved. She at least focused on making Rapunzel and her iguana red, but didn't quite pay attention to the lines.

Here we focused a little more on the lines and even practiced a couple letters.

In the coloring job above we focused on getting the hair yellow and the dress pink for Sleeping Beauty.

This is a painting of a face. I think this is supposed to be Nick, though she didn't do the hair. She did draw some glasses and nice purple ears.

Here she colored Ariel with red har and a brown tail. She also colored Ariel's skin (face and stomach) brown.

She colored Rapunzel's dress two different colors, but really spent time and energy getting her hair the right color yellow and staying in the lines.

This painting above is apparently Ellie with "baby sister". She has hair and where you think she drew a belt, that's really her mouth. There aren't any arms, but I do think "baby sister" is in a stroller or blanket or something.

Here is her coloring for Nick's Father's Day cup that she made at school. I thought it was really interesting that each letter and each object is a different color. I really think she did focus on this. Also, this is a new medium, colored pencil.
Can you tell which princess this is? Well, maybe you don't know the princesses as well as Nick and I do, due to Ellie's slight interest in them. This is Rapunzel that Ellie painted by herself with watercolors. Note the LONG blonde hair and purple dress. She also used an orange for her face.

Know who the picture above is? Come on...even if you don't breathe the Disney princesses like Ellie does you have to have an educated guess. Red hair, green bottom, purple bikini...Ariel. Ellie painted this one all by herself.

She really is growing an interest and better hand/eye coordination when it comes to art. She is definitely right handed. The effort and focus she uses to color/paint now is really interesting to us. I hope you enjoyed the art show!
