'Tis the Season 2015

Its December, which means it has been a gauntlet of recitals, shows, parties, get-togethers, and special visitors. Winter break is upon us, which means things are a little slower, but of course...now we have Christmas in a few days.

Early in December we heard that Santa was making a special stop at the Huntington, and so we rushed down there to meet him. Both kids did pretty well, even though we expected Calvin to lose it. Of course, we had to remind Ellie not to pout around Santa. She did bring her list, as well as lists that she made for me, Nick, and Calvin. Calvin's list had ball and fake kitty (stuffed animal kittens).

Then we got the tree and decorations up around the house. Calvin tried to help, but, he was mre excited about finding the ornaments that he could throw.

And then that evening, we went with friends to a community event and saw the Christmas Tree Lane, tree lightening. Christmas Tree Lane has super told trees that are huge that they (I guess the city?) put lights on. Its absolutely beautiful and so much fun.

On the 13th Ellie had her ballet recital. All the music was from the Nutcracker Suite and Ellie and her class had music from the party scene. There were two shows (the big kids danced twice, the little kids each did one show). Ellie did really well, including helping direct her friends while on stage.

December 16th was a busy day. I wasn't going to be able to make Ellie's school concert on the 17th, but I talked to the principal and I got a sneak peak on the 16th during their dress rehearsal for the concert. I snuck in to the auditorium as Ellie and her class were about to walk in; I think Ellie was a little startled to see me. It was pretty fun to see the kids and their teachers in there world. And again, it just reinforced how Ellie is at the right school and has amazing teachers.

And then, the evening of the 16th, was Ellie's after school program showcase. The kids were so cute, and did a great job.

On the 17th was Ellie's concert that Nick attended. Hopefully he will read this and upload his photos and put a couple on this blog post. He's asleep right now, or I'd ask him.

On the 18th, Ellie's last day of school before break, was Calvin's holiday party at his school. He wasn't too excited to participate (you can just barely see him on the floor, throwing a fit in the picture below), until he saw the cookies, but we all had fun. There was circle time, and there was a visit from Santa and his wife, Calvin was very excited to see them..not at all.

Today, after attending a birthday party, Ellie and I invited some friends over for gingerbread house building. Well, Ellie and her friends tried really hard to make gingerbread houses from a kit and had fun...I think (there was some tears of frustration, but not from Ellie). My friends and I got to catch up on all the exciting events we have been dealing with, and how school was going for the girls. The girls made quite a mess in the dining room, but they all worked together to clean it up. They had fun playing together.

Of course, through all this fun we replaced our HVAC system, 3/4 of us had strep throat, Ellie had a cavity dealt with, there was some crazy work hours from both me and Nick, we attended a few other parties with friends that didn't make the cut for a blog post, and we had the normal daily grind of making lunches, school, naps, piano lessons, and everything else. Its been a doozy and we are all looking forward to a little bit of a break.

'Tis the season!

Calvin is 21 months old!

Today the little man became one month closer to two.

He's funny, totally a clown and wants to make people happy.

He's talking more and more each day. New words seem to appear daily. He even says "El-O" for our elf (Ellio).

He's still loving throwing, bouncing, and playing with balls. He also loves books. He's now big enough that he and Ellie can play together...kinda...he basically runs abound and copies what she does. He has just started to become interested in figurines as well as big trucks. Today our neighbor had a concrete placement and there was a ready-mix truck on the street, Calvin got very excited and said "whoa" when we drove past it.

He's caring and sweet. He's also obsessed with Nick currently. It's "dada" for everything and when he's around he won't let me sit next to him or change his diaper.

Today we got his school pictures. They are amazing in so many ways!

I went to London!

Way back in October, Susie, Grandpa Mike, and I went to London. It was a whirlwind trip as I flew to London on Friday, landed on Saturday morning, and flew back to Los Angeles on Tuesday. And yes, the flight was a vacation itself...10-12 hours in a seat to myself, with movies that just left the theatre that I didn't see, and free wine...it was awesome.

Susie and I shared a hotel room just off of Kensington Garden. We had some time for sightseeing before we met up with Grandpa Mike and his childhood and college friend Frankie for the world premiere of the new Bond movie, Spectre. So here are the top 5 highlights of my trip to London:

5) Tea - Susie and I found time for tea, and plenty of it. We didn't do a formal high tea, but we had plenty of tea, cream, and scones.

4) Finding things from Ellie's books - So Ellie has a few books that have images, characters, and reference things found in London's museums including the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, and the V&A (one of my favorite places on Earth). It was fun to run around the museums, as we really only had time to run through them, and find things that I recognized from Ellie's books and take pictures with.

3) Selfridges - We have always spent time at Harrods every London trip we make. This was the first time we went to Selfridges. And we found our way to Selfridges because Susie and I were looking for someplace to get blow-outs and do our hair for the movie premiere, and Selfridges had a dry bar. We also got a great deal getting our make-up done in their cosmetics area..with champagne. But before our appointments we wandered the store a little bit and loved the book area and the toy area. And our hair and make-up turned out pretty well.

2) Riding bikes across the city at night - So on Sunday night we all met for a concert of Bond music (only fitting) at Southbank Centre, across the Thames by the London Eye. After the concert, Susie, myself and some friends (the officiant at my wedding and his son) decided it would be fun to rent bikes and ride along the Thames. Well, a wrong turn and suddenly we were across the river by Parliament, and then we were in front of Buckingham, and through Kensington Gardens, and back at our hotel. It was insane and amazing.

1) The premiere - So incredible. The movie premiere was at Royal Albert Hall. We walked the red carpet. We met Q. We ate popcorn at the RAH. We saw a movie with the future King and Queen of England.

So there you have it. The top five highlights from an amazing trip to London.
